Salvation Army Books
The Musical Salvationist frames the musical history of the Salvation Army through the life story of Richard Slater, popularly known as the 'Father of Salvation Army Music'.
This book focuses upon the significant contribution of the Salvation Army to British musical life from the late Victorian era until the outbreak of the Second World War in 1939. It demonstrates links between the Army's music-making and working class popular culture, education and religion.

Ever Heard the Sound? - Steef Klepke Jr
Ever since I became aware of brass music, I was fascinated by it. The unique sound of a (in my case Salvation Army) brass band isn’t comparable with any other musical combination and probably therefore it appeal so much to me that it ‘controls’ my life. This fascination stayed with me my whole life and started to grow as from a very young age. First it was of course a humble beginning but it soon became a way of life, rather than a hobby. And it gave me so much, took me literally around the world. And I still do not want to miss it. I hope I never will. The more I discover in it and about it, the more I want to know about it. The writing of this kind of musical memories is probably the peak of my interest in the brass idiom as such as the music has given me so much.

In Good Company - Norman Bearcroft
In Good Company covers a wide expanse of time and space in Salvation Army history. The author, Lieut-Colonel Norman Bearcroft, was born in the UK in 1926 and now in retirement serves his Lord in the USA. His memoirs take the reader on a fascinating journey from Wallsend to New York via Alderney, London, Canada, Ukraine, Zimbabwe and Australia, to name just a few stops along the way. The book covers such ground as the first National School of Music, the re-formation of the Canadian Staff Band, the founding of The International Staff Songsters and much more besides. His personal insights and powers of storytelling bring historical events to life.

The Best of Both Worlds - Brindley Boon

In The Best of Both Worlds, Salvation Army officer Colonel Brindley Boon delves deep into memories covering nine decades to provide a record of an extraordinary life. His twin loves of music and journalism provide the framework for this fascinating autobiography. But, more than that, every experience he recollects seems to shine with his love for God and his desire to serve Him. Colonel Boon died in March 2009.

Bandmaster Dave Michel just completed writing a book entitled, "Symphony in Brass", a history of the Cariboo Hill Temple Band. The book also includes a CD with selections from previous recordings of the Vancouver Temple and Cariboo Hill Temple Bands. The VTB had three LP recordings (1963, 1967 & 1977) and the CHTB has had three CDs. The "Symphony in Brass" recording is digital re-mastering of all of the tracks selected from the previous recordings.

The cost (which includes the CD) is $20 Canadian, and anyone interested in purchasing the book is invited to contact our band manager, Tim Braund at tbraund@sd38.bc.ca or by contacting the corps at 604.525.7311.

Pasadena Tabernacle Band - Serving the present age

Many people have questions concerning The Salvation Army and the Pasadena Tabernacle Band in particular. Why use a brass band instead of some other more traditional church music format? What causes people to make a commitment to the Lord the music and each other? Why have there been all the changes of name and locations over the years?
